With the recent release of the less-than-stellar Resident Evil: Afterlife, it seems like the perfect time to count down some of our favorite video game adaptations. If any directors are reading, this is proof that you can capture all the action of a successful franchise while still making an entertaining story.5. Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time (2010): Director Mike Newell had success with the Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire adaptation. In Prince of Persia, he distills the essence of an action video gameamazing stunts, humorous dialogue, and attractive charactersand unleashes it with glorious visuals.4. Lara Croft: Tomb Raider (2001): This film’s main success was placing Angelina Jolie in the role she was born to play: the sultry globe-hopping thrill-seeker Lara Croft. The plot is pulpy fun, and putting Jolie’s real-life father Jon Voight as Lord Richard Croft is an inspired touch.3. Pokemon: The First Movie (1998): Released at the heyday of the franchise’s popularity, this animated flick had enough Pokemon to satisfy the most obsessive fan, but also an interesting plot in which the powerful Mewtwo attempts to break the bonds between Pokemon and trainer.2. Street Fighter II: The Animated Movie: Forget the pitiful live-action versions. This animated adaptation is the only one to bring depth to the characters while still exhibiting the bone-crunching action we all love.1. Final Fantasy: The Spirits Within: This is one of the most divisive adaptations ever, and it’s not even really based on any of the games. Still, enjoy it for what it is: an amazing demonstration of CG-animation, with a dark and spiritual storylineand, of course, plenty of explosions.
